- Respected latino leader writes to the editor of the Washington Post November 6th 2009

" Editor:

Once again truth falls victim to facts in this article. There is no truth behind the facts that are interwoven in this article to make it look as if Centro Familia, the nonprofit being "examined", is involved in some nefarious acts. The article does not say what the FBI agent was actually doing in conducting ONE interview. The FBI Special Agent in Baltimore could not comment because there was nothing to comment about and one of his agents went on a wild goose chase. By combining past events with the County Inspector General's office with the FBI visit, creates a story that may be interesting but uses the facts to produce innuendo about the honesty of those involved with Centro Familia. And, as is the case in such situations, for the innocent parties to deny any "wrong doing" merely fans the flames of suspicion and fantasy. Centro Familia may not have done the bureaucratic paperwork in the right form, but this is far from being a crime as is implied in the article. Centro Familia has done for many years and continues to do important service in the Montgomery County Latino community and for the County generally, That is why it got its contract renewed despite the IG report.

It is truly unfortunate that the few excellent organizations that we have in Montgomery County doing good for the Latino community are so often attacked unjustly with the newspaper media willing to join in. Please let the truth of issues shine through in your work as a newspaper and not a manipulated series of facts.

Sincerely,

J. Henry Montes, MPH
